Apple Baking – Day 12 of 15 Days of Winter Break Activities

Apple Baking – Day 12 of 15 Days of Winter Break Activities

Simple, sweet, and practical! Sweeten up this every day, after school snack with some cinnamon and sugar while allowing your child to take part in developing their overall sense of belonging!

Benefits:

Teaches practical life skills, develops a sense of confidence, belonging, and purpose, and helps develop sequencing skills.

Materials:

Apples, butter, cinnamon, brown sugar, a baking sheet or tray, a knife (kid friendly), one microwavable bowl, and an oil/baking brush.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Assist your child in slicing apples! You can cut them up into bite sized chunks or into slices, whichever you or your child prefers. (Tip: Precut the apple into slices, allowing your child to cut the slices into chunks. This makes it safer for your child if you are feeling uneasy about letting them use a knife!)
  3. Place cut apples onto a baking sheet or tray and allow them to bake in the oven for 15-30 minutes.
  4. Once apples are done baking, pull them out of the oven and remove them from pan onto a tray or let cool before your child helps.
  5. Melt your butter!
  6. Allow your child to dip the oil/baking brush into the butter and begin brushing it over all the apples.
  7. Sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar over the apples and enjoy as a sweet treat!

Age/Difficulty Variations:

  • For younger children (Infants-Age 4), if not familiar with using a knife, guide their hands. If familiar with the knife, stand by for guidance.
  • For older children (Ages 5-Elementary), allow them to think of creative treats they might be able to make with the same ingredients. They can try leaving the apples whole, removing the core, and filling the center before baking. Allow them to experiment with your guidance to grow their confidence in the kitchen! (For example, try creating a special dip on the side using caramel, honey, or yogurt!)
