We understand how challenging these last few months have been for families all around the world. Children are spending more hours at home, many parents are juggling remote work with their child’s education and everyone is feeling antsy for life to return to normal. While we all look excitedly to the future beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, we remember that families are still in need of resources for the present. One way to get your child engaged, spend quality time together and prepare them for the 2020-2021 school year is through Living Montessori’s Family Reading Adventure.

Participation is simple, download the fillable form where you can track your child’s summer reading minutes throughout the week. At the end of the week, send the form to us and watch how your child’s engagement helps our reading tree grow. Completed forms can be sent to summer camp coordinator Stephanie Johnson.

This adventure begins on June 15 and last for ten weeks. The books your child chooses can be short or long, depending on their interest or abilities. Some children will need help and others will choose to read independently. You know your child best, and can decide what level of support suits them.

Step 1: READ. We hope you use this opportunity to read to your child or have your child read to you. Some children may prefer to read to themselves. In this case, stay connected by asking your child questions about their story. You may ask things like, “What is your favorite part of the book so far?” or “Will you read the next page to me?”

Step 2: TRACK. When your child has read for 15 minutes, mark their progress on the form. Your child may choose to continue reading beyond 15 minutes – mark accordingly. One day may display “30 minutes” while another remains blank, both are okay.

Step 3: CELEBRATE. Send in your form each week. Living Montessori will add your child’s minutes to our growing reading tree! At the end of the summer, you’re invited to join us to celebrate in an ice cream social where we will see how much progress we’ve made as a community.
