Last year was our first ever Family Reading Adventure! Families from inside and outside of our community participated and filled our reading trees with leaves. We are excited to host another adventure and to provide your family with a summer activity, one that brings you closer together over a love of reading.

Over the course of the year, children have faced many challenges from home schooling to adjusting back into the classroom environment. The children who have returned to in-person education have worked hard to remaster the subjects they once progressed in, and the children who continue online learning have waited patiently for their chance to return to school. While we all look excitedly to the future beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, we remember that families are still in need of resources for the present that make the day feel more normal. One way to bring normalcy back to your child’s life, spend quality time together and prepare them for the 2021-2022 school year is through Living Montessori’s Family Reading Adventure.

Participation is simple, download the fillable form [PDF] where you can track your child’s summer reading minutes throughout the week. At the end of the week or following Monday, send the form to us and watch how your child’s engagement helps our reading tree grow. The books your child chooses can be short or long, depending on their interest or abilities. Some children will need help and others will choose to read independently. You know your child best and can decide what level of support suits them.

This Family Reading Adventure begins on June 14 and continues throughout our summer, ending with a celebration on Tuesday, August 31.

Step 1: READ.

Use this opportunity to read to your child or have your child read to you. If your child would rather read alone, you can remain involved by checking in regularly with them and asking questions such as, What was your story about?

Step 2: TRACK.

After your child has finished reading for the day, mark their progress on the daily tracking form. One day might display 30 minutes while another remains blank; both are okay.

Step 3: CELEBRATE.

Send in your form each week. You can drop off forms at Living Montessori or send them via Email to our summer camp coordinator Stephanie Johnson, stephaniej@livingmontessori.com. We will add your child’s minutes to our growing reading tree! At the end of the summer, you are invited to join us to celebrate in an ice cream social, where we will see how much progress we have made as a community.
