A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MONTESSORI SUMMER CAMPER 2025

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MONTESSORI SUMMER CAMPER 2025

Living Montessori’s Summer Camp for preschool and elementary children is like opening a door to a world of creativity, exploration, and boundless discovery. From the moment our campers arrive until the time they leave, every day is filled with engaging activities designed to inspire curiosity, cultivate skills, and encourage personal growth. Here is a glimpse into what a typical day looks like at our Montessori Summer Camp.

MORNING ARRIVAL AND CIRCLE

Community building and a sense of belonging is vital to children’s wellbeing. Campers arrive with anticipation. After signing in, they gather for a morning community circle, a cherished Montessori tradition where children share their thoughts, learn more about their day, and prepare for the exciting adventures ahead. The sense of community and belonging is nurtured throughout the day as campers learn to take care of themselves and others, learn with each other and together take responsibility of caring for their environment. This long-time culture lends itself to making friends and bonding with each other.

THEMED ACTIVITIES AND HANDS ON LEARNING

Each week at camp is built around a unique theme that guides our activities and projects. On this particular day for example, campers are traveling through time as part of Time Travelers: A Journey Through History. After our community circle, they make break into smaller groups to explore the wonders of Ancient Egypt or choose an activity they prefer to do on their own.

On this day, based on their age group, hands-on learning may involve crafting hieroglyphic scrolls using paper and natural dyes, while learning about ancient writing systems and storytelling. Campers are encouraged to create their own symbols, crafting messages to exchange with their peers. Nearby, others are building miniature pyramids out of sugar cubes, wood or other materials, experimenting with different structures and learning about engineering principles in the process.

CULINARY EXPLORATION

Next up is a culinary activity tied to our historical theme. The campers gather around to make Egyptian flatbread, learning about how grains were milled and bread was baked thousands of years ago. Though we use modern ingredients, the experience connects them to the past and gives them a sensory-rich way to understand ancient cultures.

As they mix flour, water, and salt, they practice measuring, mixing, and teamwork. Once the dough is ready, they press it into flat rounds and discuss how bread has evolved across cultures and time. The bread is baked and shared, providing a tasty addition and education to their mid-morning snack.

OUTDOOR PLAY AND LUNCH

After a busy morning of creating and learning, it is time for outdoor play. Whether it is team challenges during Summer Camp Olympics Week or treasure hunts during Around the World in 5 Days, the children run, laugh, and build friendships in the fresh air. They return for lunch, recharged and ready for the afternoon ahead.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AND PROBLEM-SOLVING

The afternoon offers more opportunities to immerse in the theme. Elementary campers in Mad Scientists & Inventors week might be building Rube Goldberg machines or launching rockets. Those in Art Explosion week are experimenting with techniques inspired by Van Gogh or Picasso. Some children choose from endless options of open-ended art materials and discover their unique artistic expressions. The variety of activities allows each child to find his or her own passion and explore personal talents.

CLOSING CIRCLE AND REFLECTION

As the day winds down, campers gather for a closing circle to reflect on their experiences, share their stories, and enjoy a restful story time. Elementary students may present a newly written story during Storybook Adventures week or showcase their inventions on Invention Showcase Friday, children take pride in their accomplishments.
